The Garden: Where Nature Meets Luxury

The Montcalm Experience flows through every aspect of the hotel, with a central theme celebrating The Garden – a homage to the site's ancient forest origins and Georgian garden design heritage. Including floral motifs and nature-inspired elements, this narrative weaves through three distinct yet harmonious aspects:

  • The Art of Play: Inspired by Georgian garden design, celebrating the cycles of nature
  • A Conversation Piece: Echoing Georgian-era paintings of intimate garden and domestic settings
  • The Salon: Honouring the intellectual exchanges of Georgian salons, such as Elizabeth Montagu’s Blue Stockings Society.

Fired up, not burnt out: Planday uses new research to launch The Manager’s Toolkit to empower managers to tackle burnout head-on

  • 76% of hospitality managers experience burnout
  • 85% of shift workers have experienced poor mental health
  • Planday shares a practical, actionable guide for managers to use to tackle burnout head-on

Planday – the shift scheduling software by Xero – has today released The Manager’s Toolkit: a guide for managers for beating burnout and building better teams using research highlighting the depth of the burnout crisis within the UK’s hospitality industry.

The new research polled 2,000 UK based shift workers as well as 250 hospitality shift worker managers. Using the new data, Planday has released The Manager’s Toolkit: a free, online resource for hospitality managers and owners to use to create a happier and healthier workforce.

Whilst the hospitality industry is a fantastic place to work, brimming with creativity and energy, there is a hidden challenge looming: team wellbeing. The new research highlights this challenge with 85% of shift workers experiencing poor mental health, and 76% of hospitality managers reporting burnout. This is hardly surprising when 98% of workers surveyed consistently work overtime.

Dedicated to making the hospitality industry a better place to work, Planday undertook the research to explore the root causes of burnout such as unpredictable schedules, working multiple jobs and a lack of managerial support. These were then used to create The Manager’s Toolkit which provides actionable insights into how to tackle the causes, including improving scheduling practices, investing in manager wellbeing and leveraging technology.

The toolkit is a guide for managers to improve mental wellbeing in the workplace, and offers insights into how they can be a better manager. The report digs deep into different methods of communication that can be implemented, how to increase motivation at work, and build a proper sense of teamwork within the staff.

It also highlights how career development is the key to team success, with 97% of shift workers saying it is important to them. When teams can see progression at work, they have more drive to work hard, stay focussed and increase their skills.

Like most industries, the hospitality industry is ever changing and is currently undergoing a seismic shift with AI being integrated into almost every area of the industry. 94% of hospitality managers believe their employer should be investing in AI, and it is evident why - AI can help businesses automate certain tasks, streamline operations and ultimately leave room for staff to do what they do best: serving customers.

Dave Lee, CEO of Planday, comments: “At Planday, we are committed to supporting the hospitality industry and making shift work more human, which is why we have released The Manager’s Toolkit. Burnout in the hospitality industry is something that we’re all aware of, and our new research shows us just how real it is. These numbers are more than statistics; they represent real people, real struggles and the urgent need for change.

“Even if managers just take away a couple of things from this guide, we want it to be a catalyst for change and hope it will help make hospitality a happier and healthier place to work.”

NOW OPEN: THE BRASSERIE, SOPWELL HOUSE

With a passion for local, quality ingredients, The Brasserie’s menus are a celebration of comforting British classics featuring elevated twists, with every plate utilising the very best locally available produce.

Effortlessly executed to make each ingredient sing, new signature starters include Chicken liver parfait served with apple and blackberry chutney and toasted brioche; Baked scallops served in the shell with a bacon crumble and garlic parsley butter; and Goats’ cheese croquettes with roasted red pepper sauce. Must-try mains include Cornish cod with crushed sweet garden peas, shaved fennel and dill; a Braised lamb shoulder pie in a red wine jus; and the ever-popular Slow cooked beef cheeks with mashed potato and red wine sauce.

From the grill, indulge in 28-day dry aged Hereford prime steaks, from fillet to sirloin on the bone, cooked to perfection and accompanied by fries and choice of sauce. For a true showstopper, share the 900g rib of beef, cooked on the Mibrasa charcoal grill to lock in maximum flavour.

Sundays are all about the roast with a selection of premium cuts available, from the 28-day aged Angus striploin of beef to a Gloucester Old Spot pork belly. Every plate is served with an abundance of crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy on-the-inside roasties, along with seasonal mixed vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and a generous helping of gravy.

A nostalgic nod to British sweet treats, desserts at The Brasserie include classics such as Bakewell tart and Blueberry cheesecake, along with an Artisanal British cheese board of four regional cheeses with a quince paste. For a touch of decadence, opt for the rich Chocolate delice, served with a Stracciatella ice cream, before rounding off the meal with a choice of teas and coffees.

The drinks list has been thoughtfully curated to complement the menu, offering a range of beers and lagers, whilst wine aficionados can take their pick from the extensive list of bottles from across the globe including dessert and fortified options. A selection of premium wines is also available via Coravin, allowing diners to try exclusive varieties by the glass and discover The Brasserie’s little black book of expert wine producers.

Following a transformative redesign, the expansive interiors are bright and airy, flooded with natural light and feature warm tones of blue and amber, bold prints and patterned tiling that create an inviting atmosphere from morning to evening. Modern pendant lighting adds a welcoming glow, whilst layered textured fabrics, bespoke furniture and art deco touches complete the stylish look. Striking curved and custom-built banquette seating provides the perfect spot for dinner with friends, while discreet nooks and smaller tables set the mood for intimate date nights.

The White Lotus Effect: How Hotels Can Leverage Set-Jetting with Smart Technology

Thailand is experiencing a tourism surge, with bookings at the Four Seasons Resort in Koh Samui spiking by 40% this month alone. This dramatic increase is part of the "White Lotus Effect," a phenomenon where tourism surged by as much as 300% year-on-year in Sicily and Hawaii following their appearances in the hit HBO series. This growing trend, known as "set-jetting," is reshaping travel patterns as fans actively seek out destinations featured on their favorite shows.

The third season of The White Lotus has captivated viewers with its stunning Thai resort backdrop, distinctive viral theme music, and gripping storylines that reveal unsettling truths about seemingly picture-perfect guests. Despite the show's satirical and often dark undertones, viewers are separating fiction from reality, flocking to experience the luxurious paradise they've seen on screen.

Managing the Set-Jetting Boom

For hotels, this sudden influx of visitors presents both an exciting opportunity and a formidable challenge. Increased demand brings higher occupancy rates and potential revenue boosts, but it also raises guest expectations. Set-jetters arrive already immersed in the fantasy of the location, expecting a seamless, high-end experience that mirrors what they saw on screen. However, if hotels are not adequately prepared, overwhelmed staff and operational bottlenecks can quickly lead to service shortfalls - something that could tarnish both the guest experience and the hotel's reputation.

To stand out in this competitive surge, hoteliers should take note of this increasing set-jetting trend and focus on optimising the guest experience for travellers who are experiencing the region through the lens of the show. Properties need to consider how they can adequately prepare their staff to handle this influx of visitors who arrive with specific expectations shaped by what they've seen on screen. By thoughtfully leaning into these unique motivations for travel, hotels can create meaningful connections with guests while maintaining authenticity to the local culture and experience.

Themed offerings might include screening events during the series' airtime, guided tours of filming locations, or specially crafted menus inspired by the show. However, creating these memorable experiences while managing increased visitor volume requires a delicate balance between maintaining service quality and handling higher demand.

Technology as the Foundation for Human-Centered Hospitality

The latest 2024 APAC Hospitality Impact Study by Agilysys found that 46% of guests prioritise staff friendliness and knowledge. Additionally, the report found that little surprises such as pillow chocolates can drive rebookings by 66%. But maintaining this high-touch hospitality becomes challenging when teams are stretched thin due to increased visitor numbers.

This is where technology becomes the essential foundation that enables truly human-centered hospitality. Rather than replacing personal interactions, technology solutions free staff from routine administrative tasks, allowing them to focus on creating the meaningful connections that set-jetters seek. By automating processes like mobile check-ins, contactless payments, and housekeeping requests, hotels empower their teams to deliver the attentive, knowledgeable service that transforms a screen-inspired trip into an authentic experience.

In this environment, the Property Management System (PMS) serves as the conductor of a well-tuned hospitality orchestra. Like a skilled maestro, the PMS provides direction and coordination across departments, ensuring each team member performs their role at precisely the right moment while maintaining harmony with the overall guest experience. As the conductor doesn't play the instruments but rather enables musicians to deliver their best performance, the PMS doesn't replace human service but rather elevates it, allowing staff to move beyond standard hospitality to deliver memorable, personalised moments that resonate with guests long after their stay.

While not a standalone technology, a single-guest profile is made possible through PMS, enabling hotels to anticipate and meet guest needs. With this insight, the system can recommend tailored offers, such as specially curated tours or dining experiences, to enrich the stay. This single-guest profile also allows travellers to manage their reservations, preferences and more all in one place rather than across different platforms. Additionally, PMS technology connects all areas of the hotel, allowing it to recognise guest preferences in real time. For instance, if a guest expresses interest in a particular aspect of a show's setting, the system can suggest related authentic local experiences. By leveraging these insights, hotels can make guests feel seen and valued, delivering the high-touch hospitality that drives guest satisfaction and loyalty.

Turning Set-Jetting Tourism into Long-Term Loyalty

Set-jetting represents more than just a temporary boost to occupancy rates - it's becoming a significant economic driver for destinations worldwide. While this immediate influx creates valuable revenue opportunities, forward-thinking hoteliers recognise that the real value lies in converting these media-inspired visits into ongoing guest relationships.

However, truly successful hospitality brands look beyond the immediate surge in bookings to cultivate lasting relationships with guests. Hotels can transform the screen-inspired travel boom into sustained loyalty through several strategic approaches:

  1. Personalised Post-Stay Engagement: Follow up with set-jetters through tailored communications that reference their specific experiences, offering exclusive rates for return visits to explore more of the destination beyond its on-screen portrayal.
  2. Local Partnerships and Authentic Experiences: Forge strategic relationships with local businesses to create immersive experiences that extend beyond the property. PMS-integrated marketing tools can recommend authentic local dining, cultural experiences, and activities that complement the on-screen fantasy while showcasing the destination's true character.
  3. Loyalty Programs for Experience Seekers: Develop membership models that appeal specifically to travellers motivated by media-inspired destinations, offering early access to packages for upcoming filming locations or exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences.

By embracing technology, hoteliers can strike the perfect balance between efficiency and personalisation. Digital tools can handle operational demands while ensuring that guests still receive the premium, high-quality service they expect.

As the set-jetting trend continues to shape global travel, those hotels that integrate technology effectively will be best positioned to turn short-term hype into long-term guest loyalty - ensuring that the magic of screen tourism isn't just a fleeting moment, but a lasting success.

Matthew Prosser, Senior Sales Director at Agilysys

"Labour's Spring Budget offers no respite for London's £46bn hospitality sector, leaving businesses to absorb the full £300 million impact of April's 15% NICs hike and lowered earnings threshold (£9,100 to £5,000). Facing this storm of rising costs, operators are being forced to choose between staffing cuts and service reductions. This makes technology adoption not just advantageous, but essential for survival.

Modern property management systems can do more than just automate tasks for London’s hospitality sector – they can create breathing room for teams by handling scheduling, inventory, and communications, allowing staff to focus where human touch matters most. This operational efficiency becomes a retention tool, transforming unpredictable workloads into manageable ones while maintaining service standards.

Equally important is the shift toward maximising revenue from existing guests rather than solely focusing on new customer acquisition. Studies show that retaining customers can be up to significantly cheaper than acquiring new ones. By leveraging data-driven insights, businesses can personalise guest experiences, offer targeted promotions, and strengthen loyalty – creating a cost-effective strategy for driving revenue in uncertain times.

The operators proactively implementing these solutions will be better equipped to weather the storm. Business protecting their margins while looking after their staff are positioning themselves as employers and service providers of choice – exactly what the industry needs during these challenging times."

●      Belu announces the launch of new campaign ‘Drink the Difference: Served with Purpose’ to unite purpose-led businesses.

●      The campaign aims to spotlight and share examples of best practice for how brands are boosting customer loyalty while making a positive contribution to society.

●      The first wave of participating ‘Tastemakers’ include Apricity Restaurant, Herb House Spa, Kricket, Tonkotsu and Zurich

Today, Belu Water has announced the launch of a new campaign ‘Drink the Difference: Served with Purpose’ which will bring together ‘Tastemakers’ to showcase how business can drive positive change in the world while turning a profit.

Consumer confidence in the UK remains fragile, but ethical business practices continue to factor into customer buying decisions and win customer loyalty. 66% of consumers consider an organisation’s social and environmental impact when making a purchase decision, giving businesses a unique opportunity to stand out from competitors while driving positive change for the world.

The new ‘Drink the Difference’ campaign rallies like-minded, purpose-led firms to come together and share best practices for running an ethical and sustainable business. This includes showcasing businesses which are best in class for their approach - whether it be social purpose, supporting wellbeing in business, provenance of ingredients, building team loyalty or giving back to local communities.

‘Tastemakers’ – Belu’s forward-thinking, purpose-led hospitality and workplace partners – and the ‘Belu Collective’ – a network of hospitality businesses and workspace partners including Firmdale Hotels, Cubitt House Group and Zurich – will be spotlighted and encouraged to nominate a business that they recognise for leading with purpose to share their best practices.

Louise and Angie Zurich

The first wave of ‘Tastemaker’ participants include: Chantelle Nicholson (Founder, Chef and owner) of Apricity Restaurant, Tammy Kenyon (Spa Director) from Herb House Spa at Lime Wood and Luke Holder (Chief Director) of Hartnett Holder & Co at Lime Wood, Will Bowlby (Head Chef and Co-Founder) and Rick Campbell (Co-Founder) of Kricket, Emma Reynolds (Co-Founder) of Tonkotsu, and Louise Sheppard (UK Head of Corporate Real Estate & Workplace Services) and Angie Loyns (Workplace Customer Experience Manager) at Zurich.

Through this campaign, Belu is helping to build a future where water is managed responsibly, both throughout their supply chains and for those in need worldwide.

Belu is bringing together hospitality businesses and workplaces that do things differently and have a clear purpose beyond profit. From managing water responsibly and reducing single use plastics to prioritising team wellbeing and social procurement, these trailblazing businesses are inspirational across the board.

Natalie Campbell MBE, Co-CEO of Belu says: “We’re proud to launch this new campaign, which aims to inspire and connect our fantastic purpose-led partners by spotlighting how they are delivering positive impact while commercially thriving. Especially in today’s turbulent business landscape, learning how to do business differently to unlock new opportunities and win customer loyalty has never been so important.

“At Belu, our mission is to help change the way the world sees water. Our ongoing commitment to giving all of our net profits to WaterAid – that’s £6.1million in total since 2011 - is a direct result of the unwavering support from our community of purpose-driven partners. Together, by Serving with Purpose, we prove that businesses can succeed while making a difference.”

Chantelle Apricity

“We serve with purpose through everything that we do at Apricity.” Added Tastemaker, Chantelle Nicholson, Chef and owner of Apricity Restaurant. “Participating in this campaign is about coming together as a community and sharing the purpose-led approaches to business that work - both for delivering great service for our guests, and also for making a positive contribution to society. By sharing our stories and insights, we can encourage more brands to put people and planet first, because if you look after these things, the rest will follow.”

Institute of Hospitality Renews Endorsement for Tourism for All’s Accessibility Training Courses

The Institute of Hospitality (IoH) has renewed its endorsement of Tourism for All's (TFA) online disability and accessibility awareness training courses. This renewal highlights the value of TFA’s efforts in promoting inclusivity within the tourism sector.

IoH’s continued support recognises the high quality of TFA’s training, which equips tourism businesses with the skills and knowledge needed to enhance accessibility for disabled travellers. TFA’s training programme plays a key role in helping businesses meet the needs of all customers and contribute to a more inclusive tourism industry.

“This renewal reinforces our ongoing commitment to improving accessibility in the tourism sector. It reflects the growing industry recognition of the importance of providing services that cater to the needs of disabled travellers,” said Raymond Veal, CEO of Tourism for All.

TFA’s initiatives continue to make a significant impact. Its Travel Planner platform, which lists accessible accommodation, attractions, and restaurants, has seen a 40% increase in user engagement year-on-year. Additionally, the economic contribution of disabled travellers is substantial, with the Purple Pound estimated at £14.6 billion annually to the English economy. As the population of disabled individuals continues to rise, businesses that adapt to this growing
market are well-positioned for long-term success.

The UK government has set an ambitious target to become Europe’s most accessible tourism destination by 2030, alongside a new ambition to welcome 50 million international visitors per year. This goal highlights the importance of businesses embracing accessibility as a core part of their operations. By addressing barriers and fostering inclusivity, the tourism industry can unlock new growth opportunities, contributing to a more equitable and prosperous tourism landscape.

Robert Richardson FIH MI, CEO of the Institute of Hospitality, said, “We are proud to continue our endorsement of Tourism for All’s online training courses. Their efforts set new standards for accessibility and inclusion, helping to ensure the tourism sector is welcoming to all visitors.”

Hospitality Action reports record-breaking year of support in 2024

As Hospitality Action marks the fifth anniversary of its first COVID grant - a pivotal moment that triggered a sharp and lasting rise in demand for support - the charity reports that this trend has continued, making 2024 its most challenging year yet.

According to its latest Impact Report, a surge in grant applications last year was driven by mounting debt, soaring living costs, unstable work patterns and declining mental health.  Reflecting the deepening crisis faced by thousands of hospitality workers across the UK, the charity provided financial and emotional support to more hospitality households facing hardship than ever before.

Complex ‘Red Flag’ cases, where individuals faced the threat of imminent homelessness due to unpaid rent, council tax or utility bills became increasingly common. The number of emergency ‘same day’ payments awarded to prevent immediate eviction outstripped figures from the previous two years combined, highlighting the significant and ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis on the sector.

To help workers regain financial stability, Hospitality Action made vital referrals to its specialist debt partner, PayPlan, connecting beneficiaries with debt solutions, payment plans and write-offs. The charity’s partnership with Shelter also provided critical housing advice through its Helpline Plus service ensuring those in crisis had access to expert guidance.

In addition to debt support, in 2024 the charity introduced a new focus - income maximisation – with the recruitment of a dedicated Benefits Advisor thanks to the generosity of the Savoy Educational Trust. With extensive knowledge of the UK benefits system and discretionary grants landscape, within just 7 months this service unlocked more than £194,000 in previously unclaimed state benefits which hard-pressed beneficiaries were not able to access on their own.

Now in its eleventh year, the charities market-leading Employee Assistance programme (EAP) continued to provide vital support to the hospitality workforce, offering everything from legal advice and personal counselling to menopause and addiction support. Now serving 195,000 employees in nearly 500 businesses, the programme has become an essential lifeline for the sector. 2024 experienced a significant surge in demand, with calls to the EAP adviceline rising by 25% to 7,938, driven largely by concerns around stress, anxiety, finances and relationships.

Hospitality Action’s Golden Friends scheme, designed to keep loneliness and isolation at bay, supported more than 2,000 older beneficiaries in 2024. Alongside offering wellbeing support and financial hardship grants, 241 milestone birthday flowers were sent, and 4,000 personalised birthday and Christmas cards and 6,384 newsletters were posted to help ensure that retirees stay connected.

The charity’s 2024 Taking The Temperature industry-wide survey - which has cemented itself as the industry’s definitive benchmarking tool for hospitality wellbeing - uncovered some alarming statistics. Most notably, the number of hospitality workers reporting mental health struggles at some point in their careers reached 76% - an increase of 12% since 2020. When asked to identify the top three challenges hospitality workers expected to face in the next 12 months, 60% cited maintaining a good work/life balance whilst mental health and finances were reported by 44% and 42% respectively.

The annual survey provides critical, real-time insights into the evolving pressures faced by hospitality professionals, enabling Hospitality Action and businesses to develop and refine their wellbeing services to ensure support remains relevant and effective.

The level of support achieved in 2024 was only possible thanks to Hospitality Action’s remarkable - even legendary - fundraising calendar of events. From Back to the Floor and Bike to Care, to Walk for Wellbeing and Spirit of Hospitality, these four events alone raised more than three quarters of a million pounds. As demand for our support continues to rise, the ongoing generosity and participation of the industry in these events is more crucial than ever so HA can continue helping hospitality professionals through times of crisis.

Mark Lewis, Chief Executive at Hospitality Action said: “I don’t think any of us quite predicted the unprecedented surge in calls for help we experienced throughout 2024. We answered more helpline calls, delivered more counselling sessions and awarded over £1 million in grants – more than in any previous year since the darkest days of the pandemic. This has only served to strengthen our resolve to support as many of our hospitality colleagues as possible. Supporting Hospitality Action isn’t just vital for our industry, it’s a smart investment in the wellbeing and resilience of your business and workforce too."
