Doctor Seaweed, a Whitley Bay based-business, are excited to announce the launch of their  Doctor Seaweed’s Pure Seaweed nutritional supplements into spas around the UK, starting with the Serenity Spa at Seaham Hall on the North East coast.

The launch event for Seaham Hall was held on Thursday 15th June 2023 during an exclusive evening where Doctor Seaweed hosted an interactive and educational workshop with a focus on the power of all things seaweed. Seaham Hall members, local influencers and press attended and received a complimentary box of Doctor Seaweed Pure Organic Seaweed Supplements. Founder Dr. Craig Rose (aka Doctor Seaweed) spoke at the event introducing seaweed as a powerful superfood, as well as Leon Trayling, director of Scottish skincare brand ishga who spoke about all things seaweed and wellness.

Dr Craig Rose PhD commented: “Here at Doctor Seaweed our mission is to help people discover the wonder of seaweed for their health and wellbeing.  A spa is an immersive experience that allows individuals to unwind through treatments that prioritise their wellbeing. Our nutritional seaweed supplements compliment this by supporting the clients wider wellness, from the inside out. The introduction of Doctor Seaweeds supplements into spas supports the client’s wellness journey, whether that is to relax and unwind, detoxify or rejuvenate, we are delighted to be part of making people look and feel wonderful.”

The Need for Seaweed: Seaweed is a sustainable and underutilised natural resource we have simply forgotten about. It is an inherently sustainable material needing no land, fertiliser or freshwater to grow- and we are now re-discovering the huge array of seaweed benefits and finding a wide range of new ones.

Seaweed is an incredible source of critical nutrition.  The specific compounds in seaweeds are being researched for heart health, weight management, diabetes, and gut health.  A key nutrient in seaweed is iodine, and in fact, seaweed is the only natural plant-based source of this essential nutrient. With 2 billion people globally deficient, including 70% of Europeans, seaweed offers huge scope to sustainably impact the health and wellness of a huge number of people when delivered in the right way.  Iodine is critical for thyroid health, energy, brain function, development in children and much more.

“Seaweed is a forgotten food and something that most cultures around the world have used as it is so incredibly sustainable and highly nutritious. We are now re-discovering this in the West, and it is the ability to use a sustainable natural marine resource to benefit so many aspects of our lives that it gives genuine and positive hope for a sustainable and prosperous future”.  Dr Craig Rose PhD

Seaweed can save us from an iodine deficiency crisis.  The United Kingdom is now classified as iodine deficient by the World Health Organization* and ranks 7th among the ten most iodine-deficient nations in the world, one of only two high-income countries on the list.

Despite being recommended by health and dietetic experts worldwide as one of the most nutritious foods to include in our diet to meet our RDA of iodine intake, particularly important for women’s health needs, seaweed has often been overlooked in the Western Hemisphere.

Dietary deficiencies in iodine have been shown to impact mental and physical health and thyroid function severely. Maintaining healthy thyroid function is vital for good health as it controls the body’s metabolism and many other important functions, including energy, immunity, hair, skin, nails and cognitive function.  Low levels have been associated with many health concerns, including brittle hair and nails, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, tiredness, brain fog, low mood and fatigue.

Say yes to more seaweed! Seaweed packs a super nutritious punch and is incredibly rich in iodine, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. This is why Doctor Seaweed created his supplement range, which contains 100 percent pure, sustainably sourced Scottish seaweed.

This all-natural, vegan-friendly supplement is a naturally good and simple way to incorporate essential food-based iodine, vitamins and minerals into the daily diet to greatly optimise thyroid health, metabolism and cognitive function, as well as improve the overall health and appearance of skin, nails and hair.

Other valuable nutritional benefits of increasing your vitamin seaweed include:

Vitamins and Minerals – Seaweed contains vitamins, such as A, D, E, C and B, and minerals, including calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. Additionally, seaweed may be a valuable source of vitamin B12 for vegans, who are at risk of deficiency, as B12 is usually found in animal products.  Seaweed is also a source of sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, iodine, potassium, iron and zinc. In fact, because of seaweed’s unique properties, its mineral content is higher than land vegetables.

Heart health – Certain compounds in seaweed, in particular fucoidan, fucoxanthin, astaxanthin and phlorotannin, may have a protective effect on the heart, according to a 2021 review in Phytomedicine Plus. Seaweed also contains EPA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid. EPA is important for our cardiovascular health and triglycerides. It can improve our good cholesterol.  EPA is found in fatty fish, like tuna and salmon, so seaweed is a great alternative for vegans.

With a global population increasing and climate change threatening food security, seaweed is now entering the stage as the latest sustainable superfood. Most of us are familiar with seaweed in sushi, but seaweed has long been part of the daily diet in China and Japan. One-fifth of the meals consumed in Japan (which has the 2nd highest life expectancy in the world) contain a form of edible seaweed.

Doctor Seaweed, AKA Dr Craig Rose PhD, comments, “Based on our own dedicated and sustainable supply in the pristine Scottish Outer Hebrides, my seaweed supplements are the gold-standard of seaweed, and each capsule contains nothing but organic Scottish seaweed in a plant-based organic capsule shell plus other natural plant-based nutrients. Seaweed is a forgotten food that, for thousands of years, has benefited our health and wellness. As a marine biologist, I am passionate about bringing you the natural health benefits of seaweed and in ways that will make you feel wonderful.”
