The Cranleigh Boutique Hotel Looks Forward to Strong Growth With Support From The Cumberland
AN Award-winning, 5-star hotel is gearing up for a strong tourism season in the Lake District, following funding from The Cumberland Building Society.
Nestled in the heart of Bowness on Windermere, The Cranleigh Boutique aims to attract visitors to the region, offering them a truly ‘British experience’ where they can enjoy their favourite tipple in the sun while taking in the stunning landscapes the Lakes has to offer.
With The Cumberland providing a significant refinancing deal to The Cranleigh Boutique and its sister venues, Managing Director Steve Hargreaves intends to be a driving force for tourism across Cumbria. The Cranleigh Boutique offers a unique experience for visitors, giving them access to the ‘next-generation’ of luxurious accommodation with bespoke suites fitted out with the latest technology, cutting-edge design, and the largest air spa baths in Europe.

The hotel group provides a wide range of entertainment, with its sister venue the Lake View Garden Bar offering guests stunning views of Lake Windermere as they enjoy beer steins, specialised gins, or cocktails. Meanwhile, the hotel’s other venues in the area include The Fizzy Tarte, a luxury champagne and cocktail bar, and Baha, where guests can test their vocal range during karaoke.
With Steve, who holds 28 years’ experience in hospitality, harbouring ambitions to see the region’s tourism sector flourish, he sought to bring his lending, which was with multiple banking institutions, into one place so that he could plan more effectively.
The Cumberland’s work saw them structure a refinancing deal which consolidated finances across The Cranleigh Boutique and Lake View Garden Bar, giving Steve a single point of contact which would allow him to move more efficiently with future plans.
The refinancing will be used to further increase infrastructure and inspire growth with a view to further positioning the region as a must-visit area for tourism. With over 30 years’ experience of supporting businesses in the hospitality sector, the building society collaborated with Napthens Solicitors, based in Cumbria, on behalf of The Cranleigh Boutique to see the deal take place.
The Cranleigh Boutique was acquired by Steve in 2007 before he undertook a substantial refurbishment of the building to turn it into a luxury hotel which attracts thousands of visitors to the area each year. Throughout 2023 the hotel was recognised with numerous awards including Hotel and Social Certificate of Excellence and the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice awards.
Meanwhile, the rise of its sister venues has created regional jobs and provided a significant boost to the local economy. Moving forward, Steve is looking to develop staff accommodation at The Cranleigh Boutique’s premises in a bid to encourage more people into the hospitality sector and bridge the sector’s current employee-gap by providing them with a roof over their head.
Steve said: “The whole idea behind The Cranleigh Boutique is that we listened to what customers want and decided to give them that. Over the years we’ve seen a change in the way people wind down and we created a venue which accommodates this.
“They want to sit in the sun, listen to music, and enjoy a beer while over-looking the lake, before going to bed to a luxury state-of-the-art room.
“The Cranleigh Boutique’s family hits the right themes and that’s why people keep coming back, and this has a positive impact not just for us, but the other businesses around us. It’s great to be a part of supporting the local area by helping to pull visitors in.”
Speaking about working with The Cumberland, Steve added: “I’ve never dealt with a building society as efficient, friendly, and professional. I’m looking forward to a long-term, mutual partnership moving forward.
“I didn’t have much faith in banks but The Cumberland have been fabulous.”
Steve added: “The guidance from Napthens to ensure everything went smoothly was top notch in every department, I can’t thank them enough. Along with The Cumberland, it just shows what can be achieved when Cumbrian businesses come together to support each other.”
Andy Gibson, Relationship Manager at The Cumberland said: “Steve has vast experience of the hospitality sector and The Cranleigh Boutique really is a stand-out venue.
“We’ve seen the fantastic efforts of Steve and everyone at the hotel to create an experience for visitors which will see them returning time and time again. Naturally, this has a hugely positive impact on the area as a whole.
“The whole refinancing process was incredibly simple, with thanks to Napthens, and we’re delighted to be partnering with Steve. We look forward to seeing The Cranleigh Boutique flourish moving forward.”
Yasmin Blamire, a senior associate solicitor from Napthens, who acted on behalf of Steve alongside colleagues Jamie Allison and Cheryl Hood, said: “As a Cumbria firm we pride ourselves on helping the wider business community thrive and deliver prosperity for the region.
“We are delighted to guide Steve’s family business as it supports the wider Cumbria tourism industry and provides vital income and jobs in the area.
“The whole process of simplifying the business finances of both The Cranleigh Boutique Hotel and Lake View Garden Bar, was made easy by the collective efforts of everyone involved, in particular Steve and The Cumberland.
“It’s great to see Cumbria businesses supporting each other, and it means these two key hospitality venues can be around for a lot longer, serving customers from far and wide, and introducing them to everything Cumbria has to offer.”

PPDS Delivers Seamless Access to Popular Streaming Platforms on Hotel TVs With New All-In-One Philips Cast Server
Casting with confidence: The Philips Cast Server brings additional choice and opportunity for hotel TV integrations, delivering a seamless and secure solution that brings smooth experiences without the need for guests to switch to a casting network on their mobile device.
PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays, is delighted to announce the launch of Philips Cast Server, a brand new, dedicated, and highly innovative hotel TV solution designed to deliver seamless and secure casting and app streaming experiences for hoteliers and their guests alike.
The new all-in-one Philips Cast Server brings a wealth of new capabilities for hotels of all sizes, delivering opportunities to create unique and fully tailored entertainment experiences built around the needs and requirements of individual guests.
Teased at ISE 2024, and compatible with Chromecast-built-in™ Philips MediaSuite and recently launched Philips Hospitality TV 4500 Series, the Philips Cast Server has been developed using invaluable feedback from customers, hotel managers and guests. Small and lightweight, the single unit rack mounted device brings a new option for installations, seamlessly integrating into a hotel’s existing IP network to deliver a secure and private connection, with full remote management access, allowing guests to simply access and cast their own content directly to their in room TVs.
Simple and secure casting / analytics
Guests can pair their phone or other mobile device with the TV by scanning the QR code displayed on the TV screen, with no need to connect to an alternative WiFi network. Once the pairing process is successful, guests can instantly and securely cast content from their preferred accounts (including DAZN, Disney+, Prime, YouTube™, and more) directly onto the TV.
Mirroring the experience of other Chromecast built-in™ Philips Professional TVs, using Philips Cast Server content can be cast and viewed within seconds of a guest entering the room, with TVs – even those in standby mode – responding and becoming active upon the universally recognised Chromecast symbol being tapped on their cast-enabled app.
Furthermore, Philips Cast Server offers hoteliers access to a fully GDPR compliant system, delivering relevant management statistics on the usage of cast applications (such as the popularity of YouTube, Prime, etc.) – with all personal data removed – helping to gain greater insight into user habits for any future decision making. And that is not all.
The personal touch
Adding a personal touch to TVs, the Philips Cast Server has been built around the benefits of PPDS’ exclusive professional grade CMND platform, offering hoteliers a range of on-screen customisation opportunities, including tailored backgrounds (colours and images) to suit their company branding on a highly intuitive TV user interface.
Upon check in, the user interface for each TV can be set to the preferred language of guests, for more tailored, user friendly experiences.
Unique business model
Available globally – including in EMEA, North America, and Asia – the Philips Cast Server from PPDS can be purchased on an initial five year, up-front licence, extendable annually thereafter. Licence plans include Small (up to 80 rooms), Medium (up to 150 rooms), Large (up to 250 rooms), Extra Large (up to 350 rooms), and Double Extra Large (up to 500 rooms), with opportunities to extend further on a project-by-project basis.
Jeroen Verhaeghe, Global Business Development Director for Hospitality at PPDS, commented: “Expectations from hotel guests continue to evolve and, in an online world, satisfaction scores and reviews can play a vital role in the success of any hotel and whether rooms are full or remain vacant. The in room TV is playing an increasingly important role in achieving those all important positive guest experiences and reviews. Every hotel set up is different, and having the options for networking integrations enables more hotels and their guests to enjoy the benefits of our hospitality TVs. That is why we created the Philips Cast Server.”
Jan Van Hecke, Global Product Manager for Professional TV at PPDS, concluded: “As people continue to switch to sourcing their TV content from popular streaming platforms like Netflix* and Prime, it is vital hotels embrace that challenge and match those needs. But in doing so, the experience has to be seamless.
“Philips Cast Server is so simple, anyone can use it. Open the camera, scan the QR code on your phone or tablet, and the pairing between TV and smart device is complete. Backed by the other features, including customisation of screens, and advanced casting analytics, Philips Cast Server is another game changer for the hotel industry.”

Sustainable Building Automation in Heritage Buildings
Modern building control technology is a central element of energy- and cost-efficient climate control in buildings. Particularly in heritage buildings, sustainably functioning building automation requires a great deal of sensitivity when it comes to choosing the right products and technologies. When modernizing the building services and improving the air conditioning in the Bellevue Hotel Dresden, those responsible also relied on products that use EnOcean energy harvesting technology.
Modernizing building services and efficiently designing room air conditioning
The Bellevue Hotel Dresden looks back on an eventful history. Built between 1723 and 1727, the only remaining building complex on the famous Große Meißner Gasse was also the scene of politically significant events, including the reunification of Germany in 1989 and the G8 summit in 2007. The new owner of the now heritage-listed hotel with 328 rooms decided to comprehensively modernize the building services. Particular focus was placed on correcting the manual regulation of the room temperature via the radiators as well as the outdated fan convectors, which were also in operation when guests were absent and had been proven to lead to energy losses and increased energy costs. Arndt Badsanierung GmbH & Co. KG was awarded the contract for the installation of energy- and cost-efficient room air conditioning solutions. For the implementation, the company relied on room thermostats and radiator valves from Thermokon's "EasySens" wireless system, which makes use of the EnOcean energy harvesting solution.
Integrating room air conditioning into the building management system
"The key to the energy- and cost-efficient design of the room air conditioning was the decision to equip it with state-of-the-art technology and integrate it into the building management system. As a result, the hotel's technical service is now able to centrally control all room statuses and device functions," says Mario Arndt, Managing Director of Arndt Badsanierung. To ensure resource-efficient operation, the fan coils were replaced with fan coil units with energy-efficient ec motors and low noise levels. The radiators and fan coil units were linked to the presence detector and are now controlled depending on the occupancy status of the rooms: if the presence detector detects that a room is empty, a defined standby temperature is activated via the building management system. If a guest is present, on the other hand, the system enables individual control by the guest.

"The use of high-quality sensor systems from Thermokon, in particular the combination of the JOY room thermostat with Modbus interface and the EnOcean-based energy self-sufficient SAB+ electronic radiator valves and SRW03 wireless window contacts, was essential for the successful automation of the heating technology," emphasizes Timon Deisel, Thermokon Sales Manager Germany. With its flat housing, scratch-resistant acrylic glass surface and backlit LCD display, JOY blends in with the look of the room and makes controlling the indoor climate simple and precise. Communication with the building management system takes place via the integrated Modbus interface. Networking with the SAB+ radiator valve and the SRW03 window contact is radio-based and therefore also wireless. Thanks to their solar cells and intelligent energy harvesting, the two solutions reduced the installation work at the Hotel Bellevue to a minimum. By eliminating the need for regular battery changes, they also reduce the hotel's personnel costs during operation. The energy savings during ventilation are also impressive: as soon as the status monitoring of the window contact detects an open window, the room air conditioning is automatically deactivated.
Added value through energy harvesting, battery-free wireless switches and window contact sensors
"This project demonstrates the benefits of our energy harvesting technology and our sensor products. The use of alternative energy sources from the environment, such as temperature, movement, and light in this case, as well as our integrated battery-free wireless switches and window contact sensors, which provide information about open windows, for example, have contributed to increasing the energy and cost efficiency of the Bellevue Hotel Dresden," summarizes Markus Florian, CCO at EnOcean. Savings were also achieved during the modernization by reducing downtimes, saving on cabling and through external pre-assembly of the components. In addition, Thermokon worked with Wago to develop a concept based on ready-to-plug-in cabling of the components via Winsta-Box. That way, commissioning in the rooms could be carried out quickly, safely, and error-free via plug & play.
Solutions for building automation in existing buildings
The Building Energy Act 2024 (GEG) aims to promote the use of renewable energies in the building sector and also to end the use of fossil fuels by 2045. Sustainable building automation in listed buildings poses a particular challenge in this regard, especially when it comes to anchoring energy- and cost-efficient room air conditioning. The modernization of the building services at the Bellevue Hotel Dresden demonstrates the potential that can be realized when all parties involved work together in a goal-oriented and responsible manner. Together with its partners, EnOcean will continue to support owners and tenants of houses, buildings and industrial facilities with high-quality products and sustainable IoT solutions, especially in the area of retrofitting and energy optimization of existing buildings.
