New Destination Sets Sustainability Standards As Wales’ Largest All-Electric Hotel

Tŷ Hotel Newport will set new sustainability standards when it opens next month as the largest all-electric hotel in Wales.

With 146 bedrooms, Tŷ Hotel Newport will be the only hotel in Wales with more than 100 rooms operating without any natural gas, and among only a select number of large hotels across the United Kingdom to run on all-electric energy.

Opening on 31st May as the latest addition to The Celtic Collection, the new hotel will source its electricity from 100% REGO-backed renewable sources.  Solar panels mounted on the hotel roof will also create renewable electricity, contributing around 20% of the property’s overall power.

The kitchen for the hotel’s Mediterranean-inspired Casa Restaurant will operate using energy-efficient electric ovens and induction hobs which are expected to reduce energy consumption by at least 50% in comparison with traditional gas-fired equipment. The installation marks the start of a major upgrade programme to decarbonise kitchens across The Celtic Collection as part of its strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Low energy LED lighting has been installed inside and outside the hotel with passive infrared sensors in bedroom corridors and back-of-house areas to adjust lighting levels based on guest and staff use. Water saving devices throughout the hotel include aerated shower heads and wash basin taps.

The latest air source heat pump technology creates hot water, plus a modern variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system delivers highly efficient, demand-based heating and cooling, and circulates fresh and filtered air around the hotel.  All equipment is connected to an intelligent building management system (BMS) that efficiently controls heat and cooling where and when required.

The architectural design of the £20m hotel features a glass frontage covering all four floors to maximise natural daylight and create a light and airy feel, while bedrooms enjoy floor to ceiling windows.

The Celtic Collection Vice-President, Facilities & Development, Russell Phillips said: “We are delighted to be opening this landmark all-electric hotel and Tŷ Hotel Newport sets new standards for sustainable hospitality across The Celtic Collection and, we believe, for hotels in Wales. Tŷ Newport brings together a modern, sustainable construction design with energy efficient technologies, demonstrating our commitment to reducing our environmental impact.”

The sustainable hotel has achieved an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) top rating of A and been assessed as built to ‘Very Good’ standards by the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

As part of The Celtic Collection’s long-term strategy to partner with Welsh business, local contractors have delivered architectural and construction services, kitchen design and equipment, mechanical and electrical design and equipment, bespoke furnishing, and painting services.

As with all Celtic Collection hotels, zero waste is sent to landfill and all food waste is sent to anaerobic digestion to create renewable energy.

Outside the hotel, attractive planting and landscaping includes more than 1,200 trees and shrubs, enhancing the existing habitat for wildlife. Bird boxes and bug hotels will be added later this year.

Tŷ Hotel Newport opens in time for the Royal College of Nursing annual congress which is held for the first time in Wales at nearby ICC Wales from June 2-6. The hotel will be an important addition to the bedroom stock for the thousands of delegates attending events at ICC Wales as a well as a comfortable and convenient choice for leisure guests attending concerts and sports fixtures or enjoying city breaks in Newport and Cardiff.

Hospitality Action Encourages the Industry to Spring Clean Its Approach to Team Wellbeing in 2024

This Stress Awareness Month, Hospitality Action encourages the industry to seize the opportunity to spring clean its approach to team wellbeing and employment practices for the year ahead.

With the advent of spring traditionally symbolising reflection and renewal, the season inspires a fresh perspective making it the ideal time to refresh ways of thinking, reassess the company HR approach and implement new strategies that improve business focus and better support employee wellbeing and engagement.

With one in five employees in hospitality concerned that their mental health problems could impact their position within the company*, and two-thirds feeling that their mental health at work has worsened in recent years*, it is more important than ever to implement holistic policies and practices that support employee wellbeing which in turn improve absenteeism, productivity and retention.

In addition, providing opportunities for employees to give back by participating in meaningful causes is equally as important as it boosts morale and a sense of purpose, leading to shared unity and camaraderie among team members.

Hospitality Action’s full circle approach offers many purpose-driven ways to support employee wellbeing whilst also encouraging the industry to give back to support the vital work they do, to include:

Let’s walk the walk and make a positive difference together

Walk for Wellbeing, powered by mum, is back for a fifth year this autumn. One of the charity’s most important, fun and flexible fundraisers invites the entire industry across the UK to unite in raising crucial funds to support individuals and their families in the hospitality sector facing challenging times. The walk encourages employers to champion better wellbeing by getting the team outdoors to raise money and spend time together.

Eight nationwide 20km hosted walks will take place on Sunday 13 October. Those who can’t make that date can ‘Walk It Your Way' at a location of their choice any time between World Mental Health Day on 10 October to 27 October. Register here for Walk for Wellbeing.

Go the distance this summer

Also returning for a fifth year, the Summer Challenge, sponsored by CH&CO, invites the industry to show off their sporting prowess in whatever form that may take. Walking, running, cycling, wheeling or swimming, the ultimate objective is to collectively travel 40,000 miles between 7 - 17 June to make a positive difference to those in crisis within the hospitality industry. Register here.

Provide your team with wraparound care with our EAP

Hospitality Action’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) offers a care package that provides peace of mind to employers by providing employees access to a range of specialist and confidential services which can assist, educate, help and guide. Whatever the problem, an EAP provides a lifeline of support 24/7 to help prevent problems at home and at work from escalating.

Step-by-step guide to wellbeing

Hospitality Action’s free and downloadable Step-by-Step Guide offers tips and strategies on how to foster an open and supportive culture to cultivate a positive work environment and empower hospitality teams to better support their employees’ mental health.

Mark Lewis, Chief Executive at Hospitality Action, said: “We understand the importance of embracing a holistic approach in the work we do. Many people who participate in our fundraising events appreciate that they’re never far away from a friend or colleague who has called upon Hospitality Action for help. This firsthand experience inspires a desire to give back so that many more can receive the support they need.

“Fundraising for Hospitality Action is good for business too because it brings people together, it raises awareness of, and empathy towards our work, and it helps colleagues start a mental health conversation away from the day-to-day business. Added to this are the health benefits and personal fulfilment that come with taking part in our incredible events.“

Go full vintage With The Zetter Wines: The Zetter Launches First Wine Collection At Its Marylebone and Clerkenwell Properties

Boutique hotel group, The Zetter, is delighted to launch its first ever wine collection, The Zetter Wines, offering those visiting their beautiful, cosy Parlours at The Zetter Clerkenwell and The Zetter Marylebone the opportunity to enjoy two incredible blends, exclusive only to The Zetter.

What has long set The Zetter apart is their phenomenal cocktails, creatively crafted in ‘The Lab’. The Zetter’s expert mixology team is dedicated to creating ground-breaking and unique cocktails that prioritise taste above all else, with an eruption of flavours with every sip. Now with the launch of the new wines, The Zetter promises to take guests’ drinks experience to new heights, as they expand their drinks portfolio, offering guests and locals alike the opportunity to sample London’s newest tipple in The Parlours of The Zetter Marylebone and The Zetter Clerkenwell.

The Zetter Wines comprises two fantastic vintages; The Seymour Blanc and The Wilhelmina Rouge. The Seymour Blanc is a delectable white wine; a blend of Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc and Muscat. Guests can expect a crisp, refreshing glass with lively acidity and vibrant citrus notes of lime, lemon and green apple. Those drinking this wine will be transported to the sunny coast of south west France; hailing from the Languedoc region, this wine has a subtle minerality and a hint of sea breeze which evokes its coastal origin.

The Wilhelmina Rouge is The Zetter’s new red wine, boasting a juicy profile that makes it incredibly easy to enjoy! It offers ripe blackberry and plum flavours, with a touch of spice and hints of black pepper. Its smooth tannins and medium body create a velvety texture, making it a perfect companion for casual sipping or pairing with charcuterie, lamb or pork. The Wilhelmina Rouge also has its origins in Languedoc and is a sumptuous blend of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache. This wine is the perfect pairing to a cosy autumn of winter evening by the impressive fireplaces in The Parlours.

The Zetter has collaborated with esteemed winemaker, Chris Muret, to create these two brand new wines. Before pursuing a career in oenology, Chris was a melon farmer, and has a strong background in producing the highest quality melons in the South of France, selling to some of the best restaurants in the region. Here, he came to realise that wine was much more interesting and lucrative. Renowned for producing some of the best Picpoul de Pinet, Chris’ work on The Zetter Wines promises a tasteful glass to be enjoyed by guests and locals alike visiting The Zetter Marylebone and The Zetter Clerkenwell. This blend was selected by The Zetter’s wine consultant, Bert Blaize.

The Zetter Wines features a distinctive label which has been hand-drawn in ink, designed by artist Chris Druitt (Bone Dry By Design). Taking inspiration from ‘the last supper’, the label features The Zetter’s dedicated team, who are drawn to be working behind the iconic Zetter bar. The artwork emulates the style of The Zetter itself; it encapsulates the curated yet quirky atmosphere of The Zetter properties which are renowned for their striking interior design. With The Zetter team front and centre, the label perfectly depicts the cohesive philosophy of The Zetter, where every member of the team is valued.

Chris Druitt, label designer for The Zetter Wines commented: ‘When designing the label for The Zetter Wines, I didn’t want to just show off the vintage but rather incorporate the ethos of The Zetter itself. Flavours are what give the wine its quality but the label is how that personality is shown. I wanted the team behind The Zetter to be front and centre, as without their hard work and dedication, this product wouldn’t exist.’

Anas El-Bahaaj, Group Head of Bars for The Zetter, added: ‘At The Zetter, our cocktails have always been what makes us unique. However, it’s the same combination of science and love that creates a great glass of wine. As a team, we were confident that we too could bring that special experience to our guests through a glass of wine, with its own distinct Zetter twist.’

The Zetter Wines will launch on 25th of April in The Dining Room at The Zetter Clerkenwell, with an exclusive event starting at 6pm, with speeches from Anas, who will introduce the new vintages, as well as Chris Druitt, who will share his vision behind what will be an iconic wine label. Attendees are invited to experience a tasting for themselves and sip, savour, and indulge in this latest offering.

Nest Farmhouse to Launch In Norfolk On 5th June 2024

Nest Farmhouse, the countryside sibling to the Michelin-starred and Green Michelin-starred Restaurant St Barts and Nest in London, will open on June 5th. Nestled on a 1,000-acre working farm in Docking, North Norfolk, this restaurant with rooms will take its inspiration from the land it inhabits – guided by a literal farm-to-plate ethos.

Co-founders Luke Wasserman, Toby Neill, and Johnnie Crowe each have an individual connection and love for North Norfolk. In July 2022 and 2023, the trio ran a pop-up eight miles from Docking in the charming seaside village of Burnham Overy Staithe. An opportunity to cook what they love in a place they adore, the pop-up was an instant sellout, paving the way for Nest Farmhouse.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, menus available will be a seasonally changing a la carte offering as well as a daily changing special dish, a kids’ menu, and a Sunday roast. The kitchen is led by Grant Cotton, a Norfolk-born and bred, long standing employee of Nest. Grant’s knowledge and passion for all that is Norfolk shines through in the dishes he and Johnnie have created – from Scallops with Parsley and Garlic to Pork and Wild Mushroom Terrine – they are an homage to Norfolk’s land and sea ingredients. Seasonal specials will also shine a spotlight on local heroes when available, including the likes of local shot Venison and Dover Sole. As expected from  Nest, the drinks are thoughtful too. All libations take into consideration their location and community, meaning local wine is courtesy of Cobble Hill and the beer from Woodforde's is a stone’s throw away, with cocktails remaining seasonal and delicious.

Not known for its hills, the Nest Farmhouse is perched on Norfolk’s highest point in the village of Docking - commanding peerless views it offers a true sense of Norfolk’s infamous open skies. Housed in a former cattle shed it has been remodelled to reflect a chic New England coastal retreat complete with a sheltered veranda, ideal for those warm (but windy) days. The ground floor is split into two areas, with the dining room catering for 40 diners accommodating one end, and a comfortable soft seating area with a wood burner ideal for pre and post dinner drinks or just a nibble at the other. The two spaces are both served by an impressive bar which is located centrally at the back of the room, populated with bar stools, sitting at the bar is encouraged. From furniture to crockery and glassware— all have been carefully selected from independent local designers and artists. A natural colour palette enhanced with warm lighting and textured interiors makes for a welcoming space come rain, or shine.

Whilst sitting al fresco is not something you automatically associate with a Norfolk experience, Nest Farmhouse has you covered. For those wanting to maximise the long summer nights, a reeded pond complete with outdoor seating is a short walk from the front of the restaurant and is an all too tempting option. Meanwhile, the veranda surrounding the building will offer seating in the summer months, providing natural shelter from the wind – blankets are a given!

The best bit about Nest Farmhouse is you don’t need to leave. Complete with six bedrooms, you can stay as long as you like. Named after the surrounding foliage; Pine, Nettle, Elder, Damson, Sorrel, and Pippin, all put comfort first where Kingsize beds, and Norfolk made, Austin Austin toiletries deliver a spoiling experience. Complete with a breakfast tray for when you wake, and views you’ll never tire of, a stay here will ensure you leave replete.

An exciting addition to North Norfolk’s burgeoning dining scene, Nest Farmhouse is an ideal respite for locals during the quieter winter months and a must visit for those on a Norfolk Staycation. The Nest ethos is built on thought and consideration for the food and ingredients around us, nowhere reflects this better than Nest Farmhouse.

Thyme & Bertioli Launch An Immersive Collection With New Bedrooms And Products, Inspired By The Cutting Gardens At Thyme

The new cutting garden collection brings the glory of an English garden into the home

Bertioli, the sibling brand of Thyme, is delighted to reveal its new Cutting Garden collection. A beautiful, bucolic, celebration of flowers, hand-picked from the cutting garden at Thyme, and painted by its founder Caryn Hibbert.

“To fill the house with freshly cut flowers must be one of life’s greatest joys.”

The Cutting Garden is the first of its kind: immersive and experiential, with new bedrooms at Thyme as well as across Bertioli with homeware, tabletop, interiors, decorative accessories and home scent.

The whole collection is a celebration of the cut flower gardens and aims to bring the outside in, championing the philosophy that flowers make us happy. Rooted in Thyme’s ethos that our wellbeing begins with a connection to nature, the collection consolidates the idea that in nurturing nature we nurture ourselves.

Situated in the Farmhouse, the four newly refurbished bedrooms, now open for booking,  have been decorated with measured maximalism to showcase the new wallpapers and fabrics, further enhanced by cushions and lampshades from the collection. Each room is decorated with different patterns – Pink Phlox, Mixed Phlox, Elderflower, and Sidalcea.

The collection is completed with the Cutting Garden scent - a boisterous and floriferous blend that truly evokes the enchanting scent of freshly cut flowers. The scent brings the patterns to life and together, they are the golden thread that transports you to and immerses you in the Cutting Gardens at Thyme, wherever you are.

Thyme has collaborated with longstanding partner, the local furniture makers Lorfords Contemporary, to create bespoke headboards for each bedroom, exclusive to the hotel and available to order. Natural paints by Edward Bulmer Natural Paint have been used, which forms part of an ongoing partnership, and upcoming Cutting Garden pop-up at their Pimlico boutique over the Chelsea Flower Show.

“I have painted a few of my favourite flowers; unashamedly boisterous, happy and wonderfully floriferous. The patterns depict flowers in their natural form, reaching for the sun, as well as in a florist’s bunch and in linear rows, as they grow in our cutting gardens. These patterns of nature, combined with their heady scents, are the very essence of an English garden”, says Caryn Hibbert.

The Cutting Garden collection – tablecloths, napkins, aprons, wallpapers, interiors fabrics, cushions, lampshades, candles and home scent -  are available to purchase in the boutique at Thyme and online at www.bertioli.co.uk . The collection will also be available on Maison Flaneur.

The collection launched in-store and online on 24th April 2024.

The Cutting Garden bedrooms are all in the Elegant category and priced from £610 per room per night, on a bed and breakfast basis.
